The monastery was built in the 7th–8th century. There is a crypt under the church and a bell tower next to it. The monastery houses murals from the 16th century and illustrate the life of Jesus, Virgin Mary, Saint George and the King of Imereti Bagrat III. There are also portraits of the ktetors (people who provide the funds for construction or reconstruction of an Orthodox monastery) and the builders of the monastery. Their scripts say that the church was reconstructed several times.
In the 20-ties of the 17th century it was reconstructed and painted by the Bishop of Kutaisi - Gerasime Chkhetidze. It is located in a magical place in a forest on a hill. On the way to the monastery you can admire the beautiful countryside landscapes.
